Timber Frame
One of the main benefits of timber frame construction is the potential u-values that can be achieved by utilising modern insulation products. A typical value of 0.20W/m2K is easily achievable by using a combination of 032 140mm thick mineral wool slab or roll type insulations with high performance reflective breather membranes and vapour control layers in conjunction with a low emissivity service zone. An additional benefit is that, unlike rigid PIR type insulation, as flexi slab and roll type insulations provide an excellent friction fit within the timber frame panels there is a much reduced chance of cold-spots caused by the gaps which form between the insulation and timber studs.
Loft Insulation
As building regulations change year on year, with it invariably comes new specifications regarding old requirements. Loft insulation is one of those requirements which increases year on year, and with good reason too. Hot air rises, so it stands to reason that the more insulation you have in your loft, the more thermal efficient your home will be, and it for this reason why building regulations specify a greater u-value for loft insulation too currently 0.20W/m² compared to a minmimum of 0.30W/m² for walls. And in order meet the new Target Fabric Energy Efficiency (TFEE) and comply with 2014 Building Regulations, u-values need to be at least 0.13W/m² for both the roof and floor.
